“Strengthen my Hands…” Nehemiah 6:9

September 17, 2020

“They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, ‘Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.’

But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”

Where do you turn in the midst of criticism, failure, or discouragement? There are so many reasons to feel discouraged; school is online; people aren’t able to meet in person; EDGE Clubs are transitioning to virtual meetings. What does ministry look like when suddenly, all the tools we’re used to using become obsolete?

Nehemiah knew what this felt like. As he and his fellow countrymen rebuilt Jerusalem’s wall, they grew weak from the task at hand. Men came to taunt them, and the weakness they experienced was not just physical, but mental and spiritual fatigue as well. The mockers were not just attacking their job, but casting doubt on the strength of their God. By mocking their efforts, they were essentially telling Nehemiah and his crew that their faith was misplaced, and their God was powerless.

Nehemiah’s reaction tells us exactly how we should react given this same situation: not retaliation, not defensiveness, and not anger, but an immediate turning to the Lord. Nehemiah takes the problem to God, and asks Him to handle things by strengthening his hands for the task he was called to do. He’s not asking for strength to annihilate his enemies, but strength to simply do what God has called him to do. This means humility. This means trusting the Lord. This means letting vengeance belong to God and staying focused. This is hard.

How are you seeking God in the midst of this pandemic?

Are you getting distracted because you’re bored/anxious/lonely/angry, etc.?

We’ve all been there and those feelings are valid. Take them to the Lord. Trust Him and ask Him for His help, and He will gladly give you what you need to complete the task He’s given you.
